Rolando Romero’s Father was a Three-time Cuban National Champion
Rolando Romero, better known as Rolly by his parents and friends, was born and raised in a family of fighting athletes in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. He took birth on October 14, 1995, to his father Rolando Romero Sr., and his mother Mrs. Romero. His father, Rolando Romero Sr. was a remarkable boxer in Cuba and former three-time Cuban national champion.
Rolando grew up in poverty. The family lived in downtown Las Vegas, a neighborhood that was plagued with violence and frequent sounds of gunshots. He recalled his early days saying: “I was raised in downtown Las Vegas, which has always been a bad area. Growing up, there was a lot of violence,” “When I was about seven years old, the brother of my best friend at the time got shot and killed right in front of my house.”
At the age of nine, he started his fighting career, participating in Judo alongside his younger sister, Angelica Romero, who is a seven-time national Judo Champion. “I started at the same time as my sister, who is a year and a half younger than me,” said Romero. “I won a lot of tournaments, but I wound up in second place in all of the national tournaments competed in.”
At the age of sixteen, after watching the Olympics of 2012, Rolando Romero ventured into boxing and started training at Johnny Tocco’s Gym after his father prompted him to pick up the gloves. At the gym, he met head trainer Cromwell Gordon Bullet who trains him alongside his father. Before then, Romero was uninterested in boxing because he never sparred. After gaining experience in the sport and sparring in fierce competition in Vegas, his father took him to Cuba to gain more knowledge and build his skill set as an amateur fighter.

Romero began his amateur career in 2013, at the age of 18 years, with a 25-10 record and a third-place at the 2015 Olympics trials. In 2016, he made an independent decision to begin boxing at The Mayweather Boxing Club with hopes of getting signed to help his professional career. His vicious sparring sessions against dangerous boxers at the club attracted Floyd “Money” Mayweather and he was signed to Mayweather Promotions in November 2016.
On 2 December 2016, Rolando Romero made his professional debut against David Courtney at the Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall in Sunrise Manor, Nevada, and won the fight via first-round TKO. On February 22, 2020, Romero faced the undefeated Arturs Ahmetovs and won the fight by a second-round technical knockout. On August 15, 2020, he won the WBA interim lightweight title after defeating Dominican unbeaten Jackson Marinez via a 12-round unanimous decision. On January 23, 2021, he took on veteran Avery Sparrow in a PBC on SHOWTIME event from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, and defeated him. Moreover, on July 17, 2021, he defeated Anthony Yigit both victories via seventh-round technical knockouts.
Romero was scheduled to face undefeated WBA (Regular) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis on December 5, 2021, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. However, Romero was replaced with Isaac Cruz due to sexual assault allegations made against him. Later on, Romero revealed that the claims of sexual abuse against him could not be corroborated as a result, no charges against him were filed.
