George Kambosos Jr was an overweight kid when he was growing up. Despite putting his weight to good use by playing junior rugby league, he was still bullied by his peers for being fat. Kombosos Snr would take note of this and enroll his son in boxing classes as a way to improve his fitness and lose weight. The young lad would quickly get into shape and begin to excel in rugby league.
After falling in love with boxing in his teenage years, a sport he only began to part take in as a way to drop the pounds, Kombosos had to choose between being a full-time boxer or focusing on rugby league. He would end up making the decision to become a boxer as he amassed a decent amateur boxing record of 85 wins in 100 fights.
In May 2013, a month before he turned 20 years of age, George Kombosos made his professional boxing debut against Filipino fighter Jayson Mac Gura, winning the fight via a second-round technical knockout. He has since then fought 20 times and won all of them with his father by his side.
