He Became the Youngest Spaniard to win an ATP Tour Title since 2004

During his junior days, Carlos was ranked as high as world No. 22 and won two titles on the ITF Junior Circuit. He made his professional debut in 2018 and he won three titles on the ITF Men’s World Tennis Tour. Carlos is one of the most exciting players to join the ATP scene in recent years. He made his ATP main-draw debut in 2018 at the February 2020 Rio Open as a wildcard entrant at 16 years, defeating fellow countryman Albert Ramos Viñolas.

He qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open, thus making history as the youngest participant in the men’s singles at the age of 17 years and he achieved his Grand Slam debut defeating fellow qualifier, and Dutch player Biotic van de Zandschulp.

Carlos continued climbing the ladder and in 2020, he was named the ‘ATP Newcomer of the Year’ after recording a meteoric rise in the official ATP singles rankings, zooming up from number 491 to number 141. The rising star registered his first win in the Madrid Open, defeating Adrian Mannarino to become the youngest winner in the Madrid Open’s history. His victory set the benchmark and broke the previous record set by 18-year-old Rafael Nadal.

In the second round, he lost to five-time champion Rafael Nadal on his 18th birthday and he entered the top 100 as the youngest player at the age of 18 on 24 May 2021. He continued to make progress and at the 2021 French Open, he reached the third round of the Grand slam, for the first time in his career by defeating Nikoloz. On July 25, 2021, he became the youngest player since 2008 to win an ATP title on the tour level defeating Richard Gasquet in straight sets. His victory made him the youngest Spaniard to win an ATP Tour title since fellow countryman Rafael Nadal claimed his first trophy in Sopot in 2004.

At the 2021 US Open, Carlos climbed higher in the tennis scene and became the youngest US Open men’s quarter-finalist in the Open Era, and the youngest grand slam men’s singles quarter-finalist since 1990. He eventually lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime after he had to retire from the match with an injury.

He Has a Career-high Ranking of World No. 6

Turning into a professional tennis player in 2018, Carlos has made tremendous success in a short period and he is not about to soften anytime soon. He won his first career ATP 500 title at the Rio Open in Brazil in February 2022, defeating third seed Diego Schwartzman in the final. The victory cemented his name as the youngest ATP 500 champion since the category was created in 2009.

Charged and encouraged after his victory in Rio, he made an incredible run at the ATP 1000 Miami Open event, with him claiming the title with a straight-sets win over Casper Ruud of Norway in the final. The victory once again set the record of the youngest Miami men’s champion in the event’s history, and the third-youngest ATP Masters 1000 champion overall. He was also the first Spaniard to win the event, and the win busted him up to number 11 in the world rankings.

In the final, he defeated the top three seeds in three consecutive matches, making history as the first player since 2007 to defeat three top-5 players at a Masters 1000 event. He also became the youngest champion in tournament history which led him to a career-high of world No. 6 in the rankings on 9 May 2022.
