Anastasija Sevastova Chose to Play Tennis Because of Her Grandmother
Anastasija Sevastova was born on the 13th of April 1990 in Liepaja, Latvia. We do not know who her father is because she was raised by a single mother named Diana Golovanova. From a very young age, Sevastova began playing tennis after she was introduced to the sport by her grandmother.
It is said that she could have ended up playing any sport of her choice because of her athleticism but she ended up choosing tennis because her family lived near a tennis club and her grandmother had friends who played the sport. At the end of the day, this decision proved to be the best one as she made waves at the beginning of her career.
She Began Her Career as a 15-Year-Old
Sevastova took time to perfect her game in her early teenage years before deciding to turn pro in 2006 just before she turned 16. Her first high-profile tournament was the Istanbul Cup in 2007 where she recorded her first notable victory in the first round of the competition against Anastasiya Yakimova. The Latvian would, however, crash out in the next round.
In 2009, Anastasija Sevastova was able to qualify for the main draw of the US Open. She went on to win her first match in the Grand Slam tournament to further announce her arrival to the world of tennis. In 2010, the young Latvian was beginning to gain a reputation of being a giant killer as she defeated a Top 10 ranked player in the first round of the Monterrey Open. A few weeks later, she upset another top-seeded player at the Estoril Open before going on to win the title in her first-ever appearance at a WTA final.
Anastasija Sevastova was slowly becoming a fan favorite with her performances in the 2011 and 2012 WTA tours. She put on performances that challenged seasoned opponents to the amazement of fans. However, during this time, she suffered a number of injuries and illnesses that hampered her from achieving great heights. This made her call time on her career in May 2013.
Sevastova Returned to Pro Tennis in 2015 After a Two-Year Absence
In January 2015, Anastasija Sevastova felt better with her body and thus decided to return to professional tennis. She began by playing in various ITF tournaments before joining the WTA Tour. About a year after her return, she was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament (the 2016 Australian Open) where she lost in the second round.
Sevatova continued to improve as the tournaments went by. In 2017, she reached No. 17 in the world rankings. The following year, she reached her first Grand Slam semifinal where she was defeated by Serena Williams. Performance in other tournaments that year ensured that she climbed up the rankings to reach her career-high world No. 11 ranking.
Unfortunately for Anastasija Sevastova, this achievement would be the highest height she would attain in her career as by 2019 she dropped out of the top 20. The following year, she found herself out of the top 50. As of 2022, she ranks No. 79. Her favorite tournaments so far have been the Roland Garros, US Open, Mallorca Open, and Bucharest Open.
Anastasija Sevastova Has Been in a Longterm Relationship with Her Coach
Other than her mother and grandmother, Anastasija Sevastova’s coach has been another notable person in her life and career. Ronald Schmidt is the man who has been responsible for her training and performance on the court. He has also been her partner for more than a few years.
According to reports, Schmidt was born on the 23rd of June, 1980, in Leoben, Austria. This makes him about ten years older than his girlfriend. He was responsible for overseeing Sevastova’s return to playing tennis at the highest level after her long break away from the sport between 2013 and 2015. The two have made a winning combination and have managed to keep most details about their personal life away from the public.
