Tomiko had hoped his son would take to surfing as he did, but that was not the case as the young lad was more interested in skating. He began doing so at the age of 4. Because of this, his father would make a skate park (Nihonkai Skate Park) in his hometown of Murakami and start developing his son.
Hirano Began Winning Tournaments at the Age of 12
Ayumu Hirano rose to the limelight in 2011 when he won the Burton US Junior Open international snowboarding event at the age of 12. The following year, the 13-year-old won gold at the Burton High Fives, an open event held in New Zealand.
In 2013, he won silver in the snowboarding halfpipe at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado. He ended the year by finishing first place at the Burton European Open, second place at the Burton US Open, and third place at the Oakley Arctic Challenge. These achievements allowed him to become the youngest Halfpipe World Tour Champion for the 2012/2013 season.
Hirano followed up his streak of wins by winning silver at his first ever Olympics – the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He has since then been to two more Olympics games – 2018 Pyeongchang and 2022 Beijing, where he won silver and gold, respectively.
