His father, James, owns a baseball complex in Pine Lake, Georgia, while his brother, PJ Philips, is a professional baseball manager. While attending Redan High School, Brandon was a baseball star. He made such an impact that the school retired the number 7 jersey in his honor. Following his MLB draft in 1999, Philips played in minor leagues till he was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2002. However, he didn’t perform well enough, so he shuttled between the Indians in the majors and minor league teams.
In 2006, Phillips was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. He went on to develop into one of the best second basemen in baseball history during his tenure in Cincinnati. After joining the Reds, he won four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, one Silver Slugger Award, and was selected to play in three National League All-Star teams. He also became the first player to record two three-run home runs, seven RBIs, and two stolen bases in one game in the history of MLB.

Philips ended his long-term stint with the Reds in 2016 when he waived his no-trade clause and was traded to the Atlanta Braves for some minor-league players.
