Madut Bol is the son of the late NBA player Manute Bol. Fans of basketball in the 80s and 90s will remember the Sudanese-American professional basketball player to be an intimidating force on the court. Manute stood between 7 feet 6 inches (2.29 m) and 7 feet 7 inches (2.31 m) tall, making him one of the tallest players in the history of the league. He put his height to good use by being one of the greatest shot blockers in the game. When he retired, Manute Bol had more blocked shots than points scored.
Off the court, Manute had a large heart that was full of compassion for his fellow man. He spent a lot of his time and money made during his NBA career supporting various causes that promoted human rights and various other causes in his war-ravaged home country of Sudan. Unfortunately, while caring for his people, Manute abandoned his family in America, including his son Madut who hoped to have a professional basketball career. Madut’s father married another wife back home and had a couple of children, one of whom is NBA player Bol Bol. Do the pair have a relationship or are things frosty between them?
Madut Bol Is One Of Manute’s Six Children With His First Wife
Madut Bol was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on December 19, 1989. He is one of six children born to the late basketball player and his first wife Atong. When Madut was born, his father was playing halfway across America in California for the Golden State Warriors. Because of his career and his work as an activist, Manute was not always around during his son’s formative years. More annoyingly, he was not also providing for them as much as he should have because he used his earnings to do charity work. This meant that his family struggled financially.
In the mid-90s, when Madut was about 5 years old, his father packed his bags and embarked on another trip. Everything seemed normal but Manute never returned. There were no calls or letters from him to his family. He just got up and walked away from the life of his family without any explanation. The next Madut and his family would hear about him was in 2001 when he was featured in a Sports Illustrated story. In it, Manute revealed that he had taken a second wife and had a son named Bol Bol.
He Tried To Have An NBA Career But Was Unsuccessful
Madut and Manute had an up-and-down relationship. The younger Bol was upset because his father was never around. Regardless, he still wanted to follow in his footsteps to have an NBA career. Madut famously played college basketball at Southern University in New Orleans. He played as a power forward for the Southern Jaguars in the NCAA before graduating in 2013. At the time, he stood at 6 feet 8 inches tall.
Following his time in college, Madut was unable to carry on his father’s legacy as he never made it as a professional. Many years later, however, another child of his father managed to do it, the one he had with his second wife.
Madut Bol and His Half-Brother Bol Bol Have A Wierd Relationship
Before and after the death of Manute Bol in 2010, his sons Madut and Bol never built a relationship. They have rarely spent time together or even spoken. Madut has made known his intention to have a relationship with Bol, saying he wants to be there for him and help him like a big brother is supposed to do. However, the two rarely see each other and when they do, their conversation is reported to be awkward and distant like two people who hardly know each other.
Bol Bol was born on November 16, 1999 in Khartoum, Sudan. When he was two years old, the Second Sudanese Civil War had broken out and so his family had to leave the country as political refugees to the U.S. With the encouragement of his father, Bol began playing basketball by the time he turned four. While he was reluctant about it, he would later start training with his father in the gym. As a seventh-grader, Bol had grown to a height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) and was attracting nationwide attention.
By the time Bol finished high school, he was 7 feet 2 inches tall. He would go on to play college basketball for the University of Oregon before declaring for the 2019 NBA draft after his freshman year. He was selected 44th overall by the Miami Heat who immediately traded him to the Denver Nuggets.
