How Dan Henderson Ammased His $8 Million Net Worth
Dan Henderson made himself a wealthy man after fighting at the highest level in mixed martial arts. He was notably the last Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion and the last Welterweight and Middleweight champion of Pride Fighting Championships. His earnings from these victories and all other fights he won have played a significant role in him having a net worth of $8 million.
Since retiring, he has launched a number of businesses that center around his career. He runs an MMA training camp and owns an athletic fitness center and fight club where he tries to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of fighters.
He Started Wrestling in High School
Dan Henderson began showing signs of being a fighter as a young boy. His competitiveness was noticed by his parents at a young age as he and his brother would always go at it. This prompted them to encourage their boys to join the school’s wrestling team where their father happened to be a coach. Henderson competed in freestyle wrestling but later concentrated on Greco-Roman wrestling where he excelled.
In 1987, Henderson was part of the school team that was crowned state champions in the California State Championships, having been placed second as an individual competitor. The following year, his school retained the state title but Henderson slumped in the rankings. That disappointment turned out to be the motivation he needed to win national crowns in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling at the National Junior Championships.
After high school, Dan Henderson attended California State University Fullerton and then Arizona State University where he continued wrestling. He was the university national champion in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1991, 1993, and 1994. This allowed him the opportunity to represent the United States at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games as well as in the Pan American and World wrestling championships.
Henderson won His Debut Mixed Martial Arts Competition
In 1997, Dan Henderson began training in mixed martial arts. He found early success in the sport as he was crowned champion in his first-ever tournament – the Brazil Open Lightweight Tournament. He went on to win the next tournaments he fought in – UFC 17 where he famously fought with a broken jaw, and the Rings: King of Kings tournament.
Following those successes, Henderson dropped wrestling to fully focus on an MMA career which turned out to be the best decision he ever made. In his MMA career that lasted from 1997 to 2016, he fought in a total of 47 matches, winning 32 and losing 15.
Dan Henderson’s most notable MMA fights were against Kazuo Misaki, Quinton Rampage Jackson at UFC 75, Anderson Silva at UFC 82, Michael Bisping at UFC 100, and Mauricio Rua at UFC 139 – a fight described as the greatest fight in UFC history. The fight was so memorable that it has been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.
