Sydney McLaughlin is Willie and Mary McLaughlin’s Daughter – Meet Her Family

Sydney McLaughlin is the daughter of Willie and Mary McLaughlin. Her parents gained huge recognition after Sydney became the world record holder in the 400 meters hurdles. The American hurdler and sprinter is the daughter of parents who were athletes in their heyday. The McLaughlins are reported to have participated in track and field events during their younger days, and it was their shared love for athletics that connected them.

Syndey is not the only child of Willie and Mary, as they have three other children. Below is all there is to know about her family.

Willie McLaughlin was born on February 13, 1963, in Dunellen, USA. He is an African American man, but details of his family and early education remain unknown. We, however, know he attended Manhattan college in New York, where he met his wife Mary McLaughlin.

Sydney McLaughlin’s father was a sportsman who had a passion for sprinting. It is reported that he had competed in various track events as a child and won multiple awards. Willie aimed to make it to the Olympics and so qualified for the Olympics trials in 1984 for the 400-meter dash. He displayed an impressive performance to reach the semi-final stage.

While still active as a sprinter in the late 80s, Willie McLaughlin discovered he a had a heart problem during a routine medical check. He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy (a chronic disease of the heart muscles). As a result, Sydney’s dad had to stop competing in track and field events. He would go on to face life-threatening symptoms like shortness of breath. He has since undergone heart surgery and is no longer in danger.

There is limited information regarding the birth of Mary McLaughlin. Regardless, we do know that she is the daughter of Frank and Helen Neumeista. She is American with caucasian ethnicity.

Mary grew up in Idlewood off of Woodstock not far from Brighton pool where her parents lived. She attended Cardinal O’Hara High School in Tonawanda, New York where she graduated from in the year 1975. While in school, Sydney McLaughlin’s mother took interest in sports and ran track. She was also a cheerleader

After High School, she proceeded to attend Manhattan College in New York City where she majored in mathematics and had a minor in computer science. While studying, Mary never relented in her track activities. It was through this that she met her husband Willie McLaughlin.

Mary McLaughlin graduated from Manhattan College in 1983 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science. She would go on to work with Western Electric which served as the primary equipment manufacturer, supplier, and purchasing agent for Bell Systems. After Western Electric folded up, she gained employment at Bellcore where she worked at  for 15 years.

Sydney McLaughlin’s Parents Married in 1992 and Have Four Children

Sydney McLaughlin’s parents met at Manhattan College in New York. Following their meeting, the two student-athletes became friends before later starting a relationship. They dated through college and married in 1992. Their union has since been blessed with four children; 2 boys and 2 girls.

The couple’s first child is Morgan McLaughlin who was born on May 05, 1994. Morgan trained to become a professional sprinter but was unable to make it. She now works with older folks in an elder care facility. The McLaughlin’s second child is Talyor McLaughlin who was born on August 03, 1997. As it is with his parents and sister, Taylor also took to sports early on in his life. He ran track while studying at the University of Michigan. He won silver medals at the under 18 and under 20 World Championships before he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Taylor would end up making the Olympics trials but was not selected to represent his country.

Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin, who was born on August 07, 1999, is Willie and Mary’s third child. She is undoubtedly the most popular of her parents children. Her career accomplishments have proven that her parent’s commitment to her athletic pursuits paid off. The youngest member of the family is Ryan McLaughlin. Information about his birth date has remained hidden but we know that he attends Cal State Fullerton. Like his elder siblings, Ryan participated in track events while in high school although it is not known if he will go pro.
