In 2021, the family was in the news as Eric had to live in a hotel throughout the football season in order to isolate himself from his wife and sons. Because of this, it was decided that Eric would stay in a hotel six nights out of the week. He would then come home on Fridays but would have to be wearing double masks and keeping a distance. He also slept in the basement during that time.
