Johnny began playing basketball at a very young age, and his parents have been an incredible source of encouragement and support. The Asian-American basketball player attended Harvard-Westlake High school in Los Angeles, California. While studying there, he joined and played basketball in the point guard position on the school’s basketball team.
Johnny displayed impressive skills, contributing to the victory of her team at the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS) Division 1A Championship after he recorded 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists in the final. He also led the team to their first league title after recording 25 points in the championship game.
During his freshman season, Johnny averaged 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and two assists per game. The young athlete continued to impress in his junior season as he recorded 23 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. Johnny attracted college scouts after he won the most valuable player of the Mission League MVP award that year.
He Had an Outstanding Basketball Career at UCLA
Following his incredible basketball career in high school, Johnny chose to play collegiate basketball for the University of Kentucky over offers from Virginia, Kansas, Villanova, and Oregon. After one season with the Kentucky Wildcats 2019-2020, he transferred to the University of California Los Angeles.
Soon after committing to UCLA Bruins of the Pac-12 Conference, Johnny was unable to play the first four games of 2020-2021 due to a stress reaction in his right foot. At UCLA, he continued his prolific performance as a player on the school’s basketball team, he recorded 10 points off the bench in a win against San Diego in his debut. On January 14th, 2021, he contributed 17 points which led the team in recording a 91-61 win against Washington State.
Johnny scored a career-high 32 points in a 64-61 win against Washington. With his outstanding performance on the court, he became the team’s leading scorer and the first Bruin player to score at least half of his team’s points in a game since Reggie Miller. In the same year, he joined Miller and Lew Alcindor to become the third player in UCLA history to score at least 20 points in their first two NCAA Tournament games.
During his sophomore season, he helped lead his team all the way to their first Final Four since 2008. The Asian-American basketball player continued smashing and setting new records as he became the first player to score half of his team’s points in a regional final win since 1960, and he was named the most outstanding player of the tournament’s east region. After an outstanding 2021 NCAA tournament where he averaged 22.8 points, he was named to the 2021 All-Tournament Team.
Johnny declared for the NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility, but surprisingly he opted to return to UCLA for another season. Despite his injury struggles which derailed his momentum, he maintained his position as the leading scorer at UCLA, and he was named a third-team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as well as the All-Pac-12 first team.
At the end of the season, Johnny Juzang left UCLA to enter the NBA draft, but sadly he went undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft. He is currently playing for the Utah Jazz on a two-way contract for the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA G League. Johnny Juzang, who remained undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, was picked by the Utah Jazz as a free agent, but unfortunately, his debut with the club was delayed after he suffered a concussion in a car accident a few days after he arrived in Utah. The Jazz announced that Johnny wouldn’t participate in the summer league as a precautionary measure after he was involved in the car accident on Saturday, July 2, 2022.
Johnny’s father assured fans and well-wishers of the basketball player that his son was fine and that his injuries were not very serious. As of now, details about the injuries he might have suffered remain unknown to the public.
